Match result:

The Brisbane Lions have shaken off a persistent and challenging North Melbourne side who were at level pegging with them when just minutes remained in the contest.

A controversial free kick and goal to Oscar McInerney, combined with a follow up goal from small forward Lincoln McCarthy, saw Brisbane get over the line.

The Brisbane Lions will look to clock a fifth straight win when they play North Melbourne at the Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:25pm (AEST).

The Lions are on a four-game winning streak, while the Kangaroos had won consecutive games prior to last weekend’s loss to Essendon.

Brisbane are the surprise packets of this year’s competition, coming third behind only Geelong and Collingwood, while the Roos are 12th.

These teams have met once this year, back in Round 2 when the Lions took a 20-point win at Marvel Stadium.

The Lions have a 11-5 win-loss record, and the Roos are 7-9. North are two wins out of the eight, with six rounds to play, so they’re not out of contention.

However, with three teams between them and the eight, and Fremantle breathing down their neck, North need to win a lot of their remaining fixtures.

Brisbane are unlikely to overtake the Cats at the top of the ladder, but they can definitely cement a place in the top four in the coming rounds.

In team news, an injury has ruled Luke McDonald out for North Melbourne, while Curtis Taylor and Paul Ahern have also been left out.

Mason Wood, Shaun Higgins and Sam Durdin come in as replacements.

For Brisbane, Ben Keays, Josh Walker and Ryan Lester have all been omitted, bringing in Eric Hipwood, Hugh McCluggage and Luke Hodge.

It’s hard to go past a high flying Brisbane team in this game, although North Melbourne might put up a fight.
