Match preview:

The Brisbane Lions have waited ten years for a return to finals, and now it’s here! They host the Richmond Tigers at the Gabba in the last of four AFL Finals matches this week. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:25pm AEST.

What a season it has been for Brisbane. They won just five matches last year, but have a nice combination of factors has seen them rise rapidly up the ladder.

One is the natural improvement of their young players. Hugh McCluggage represents this as well as anyone, coming close to All Australian selection this year, but he’s just one of a very talented bunch.

The other big factor has been their brilliant recruiting. Lachie Neale is the headliner here, but players like Jarryd Lyons, Marcus Adams, Lincoln McCarthy and more have all had an impact this year.

Of course, you’ve also got to note that Brisbane have had a beautiful run with injury in season 2019 – potentially giving them just the right run of luck they need for a real shot at the premiership.

Daniel Rich will be the only player in the team tonight to have played a finals match for Brisbane, but Luke Hodge, Robinson, Charlie Cameron, McCarthy, Neale and Lyons have all played in September before.

Richmond on the other hand have had a remarkable 2019 and at this stage are probably premiership favourites thanks to a run home that saw them win their last nine matches in a row.

Despite being hit hard by injury particularly early in the season, the Tigers weathered the storm and have made it through to a top-four spot.

The big question for them is this: can they win their first ever finals match outside of Victoria? While they’ve never gotten it done before, this is only their third opportunity.

The Tigers were the better of these two sides by 27 points a fortnight ago when they met in Round 23, but don’t expect that to be a huge factor tonight. This one is alive and well.
