The Brisbane Lions begin their 2021 campaign with a test against the young Sydney Swans at The Gabba on a Saturday night. Stay up to date with their AFL clash with live scores on The Roar from 7:45pm (AEDT).
After two consecutive top four finishes, the pressure is on Brisbane to go a step further this season and finally get themselves into a grand final. They signed Joe Daniher in the offseason to address their weakness in the key forward position, but there are still question marks over the ability of their forward group to function consistently. They’ll look to make a statement against a rebuilding side tonight.
Sydney, on the other hand, are well and truly in the middle of a rebuild. There was a lot to like about their young players last season and, although there’s still some top veteran talent around, 2021 will be another year of pumping as many games as possible into the kids – especially their recent draft haul of Logan McDonald, Braeden Campbell and Errol Gulden.
The Swans used to dominate this rivalry, but the Lions have struck back recently, winning the last two meetings after having lost the previous 11 in a row. Brisbane used a magnificent fourth-quarter effort in last year’s meeting to shake off a dogged challenge and prevail by 32 points.
