Finals hopes rekindled, the Carlton Blues simply must defeat the Gold Coast Suns to have any chance of pulling off a last-ditch run to September. Follow the action from Marvel Stadium with live scores on The Roar from 1:45pm (AEST).

Teams seem to be trying to avoid seventh and eighth on the ladder like the plague, meaning that despite sitting twelfth with an 8-11 record, the Blues are still well and truly in the mix heading into the last three weeks.

A 31-point win over St Kilda last week had the added boost of all but eliminating another contender in the Saints. With Harry McKay and Sam Walsh starring as usual, plus Charlie Curnow getting through his first AFL game in more than two years unscathed, the Blues and under-fire coach David Teague are primed and ready for a season-defining final three rounds.

The Suns’ month of encouragement was all but completely undone with a humiliating 98-point loss to Melbourne last week. All the gains from wins over Richmond and GWS, plus gutsy performances against the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane, came crashing down around them with as bad a performance as the Suns have ever dished up. Considering their history, that’s something.

Rumours will continue to swirl around Stuart Dew’s future at the helm if the Suns keep on losing, especially now that Alastair Clarkson is available. Whether he’d want to coach the AFL’s problem child is, of course, a different matter.

Veteran Eddie Betts is back from an injury layoff, replacing youngster Matthew Owies; while the Suns have wingman Brandon Ellis back from a hamstring injury, while also including fellow Richmond premiership hero Jacob Townsend.
