The Carlton Blues farewell a great of the game in Eddie Betts as they take on a GWS Giants outfit needing a win to secure a finals berth. Follow the action from the champion forward’s swansong with live scores on The Roar from 7:40pm (AEST).
It’s 350 and out for Betts, regarded as one of the greatest small forwards to have ever played the game; with 218 coming as a Blue, it’s a tragedy the COVID-19 pandemic will see him finish up playing behind closed doors.
The Blues appear shot in 2021, as do David Teague’s chances of keeping his job for next season; not even the retirement of another club great in Marc Murphy could prevent them sliding to a disastrous 95-point loss to Port Adelaide last week. Even if they can’t send Betts off a winner, though, they simply must avoid conceding the last 19 goals of the game, as they did against the Power.
For the Giants, the equation is simple: win, and seventh spot is theirs. Dealing with a horror run of injury, Leon Cameron has done superbly to steer the team through this season after a nightmare 2020, and they loom as being capable of doing real damage in September.
Acting captain Toby Greene is back from his one-week suspension, while the Giants have opted to rest ruckman Shane Mumford ahead of a vital September workload. For the Blues, co-captain Patrick Cripps has also returned after being a late withdrawal last week.
