The Carlton Blues return to the MCG after a thrilling win in the west to face the Melbourne Demons on Sunday afternoon. Join The Roar for all of the action, with live scores and a blog of the match from 1:10pm (AEST).

Former skipper Marc Murphy was the hero last Sunday afternoon in Perth, when he kicked the match-winning goal with just 30 seconds left on the clock against Fremantle.

Earlier in the match Murphy and young Sam Walsh had stepped up in the midfield absence of co-captain Patrick Cripps, as the Blues fought back from a quarter-time deficit of 29-points to pull off one of the upsets of the season.

Melbourne suffered a 33-point loss to the Brisbane Lions up at the Gabba earlier last Sunday.

The Demon’s matched the Lions and even led at various points until half-way through the third term, however the Melbourne defence let Eric Hipwood get away and kick five in around 15 minutes of brilliance from the tall forward.

Max Gawn suffered an ankle injury and sat on the bench for the final term, however, has passed fitness tests to play this weekend.

Just a few changes between the teams for this clash.

In the opening term last Sunday, Charlie Curnow took a knock to the knee and went straight down to the rooms in pain.

After initial concern it was a serious, season-ending injury, positive news came through that it was a low-grade medial ligament injury which will not require surgery and should see the forward only miss three to four weeks.

Carlton have chosen Darcy Lang to replace the injured Curnow.

The 23-year-old midfielder has impressed for the Northern Blues in the VFL, earning a call up to the AFL and he will start on the interchange.

Melbourne have made two changes for this clash at the MCG.

Tim Smith is set to miss with a sore calf sustained in the loss against the Lions. Oskar Baker has been omitted.

After a strong run in the VFL, Jordan Lewis has been recalled to the senior side.

Joining the 311-game veteran is first-gamer Kyle Dunkley, who has been named on the interchange.

Dunkley – brother of Josh (Western Bulldogs) and Lara (Melbourne Vixens) – was playing for Gippsland Power in the NAB League Competition before he was taken by the Melbourne Demons in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

The 19-year-old will make his AFL debut against the Blues after four games for Casey in the VFL.

These two teams last met over 12 months ago in round nine, 2018. Melbourne smashed the Blues by 109 points, the percentage boosting victory moved the Demons into third place and was one of 14 wins which saw them play finals in 2018.

It will be a different story this year though, as the pair are more evenly matched; Melbourne is struggling in 16th place with four wins, while Carlton moved off the bottom of the ladder with its third win last weekend.

Prediction
Both sides beat Fremantle in the last fortnight; first the Dees at the MCG and then Carlton in Perth, and I’m finding it tough to split them.

If you wanted to tip an upset this round, I’d go with the Blues. Though, on the MCG and after a few weeks of reasonable form, my head says Melbourne will get up.

Melbourne by 15 points.
