Carlton and Richmond face off at the MCG in the second match of the 2022 AFL season. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7.25pm (AEDT).

Two sides used to opening the season will do battle on sacred turf tonight, in search of starts to seasons they hope to be better than the ones they experienced in 2021. Richmond, for the first time in a long while, were caught out last year; the stresses and high performances achieved by the most dominant club in the current era, no doubt weighing on them and leading to an eventual 12th placed finish and just nine wins for the season.

Many are bullish about the chances of the Tigers this season, with a firm belief existing that the basic blocks of success are there and a few new and younger bodies destined to make them a much more consistent and dangerous team in 2022. Damien Hardwick has hoed this road before and a statement in the first round may well grab the attention of every team hoping that the reign of Richmond had come to an abrupt end.

Carlton have Michael Voss at the helm, a host of still developing high draft picks and a fresh hope for the season, after some impressive work in the pre-season matches. Logic suggests it may yet take a further season or two for the Blues to be a serious contender for the flag, yet there were offensive and defensive signs in the practice matches to suggest that Voss has cleaned up their act and has them on a much clearer path to success than seemed likely under the previous coach.

As is always the case, Carlton and Richmond at the ‘G’ is a special event and certain to tell us a great deal about where the two squads stand entering the new season.

Prediction
Some folk think Richmond are a shadow of their former selves. I do not and despite Voss appearing to have made positive changes at Carlton in his first few months at the helm, the Tigers will make hay and win this one in a canter. Richmond by 32 points.
