Show Preview

The 2019 AFL season gets underway tonight as arch-rivals the Carlton Blues host the Richmond Tigers in the league’s traditional season-opening clash at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:25pm (AEDT).

The AFL returns tonight! Although beginning the season with Carlton and Richmond often can (and does) rouse a little controversy in some quarters, beginning the season under lights, at the ‘G, with a large crowd is the perfect encapsulation of the sport we all love.

Carlton are striving to improve from the low starting point of last year’s finish: eighteenth. Last. Wooden spooners. Whatever the description, it’s clear the Blues are hoping to improve their fortunes this season, and there’s no doubt tonight will demonstrate just that.

Richmond, too, will feel they have a point to prove, and you’d expect them to be gunning for a strong beginning of the season to redeem themselves after last year’s preliminary-final capitulation.

This time around, both teams have added some talent to their lists. Richmond, notably, have Tom Lynch in their forward ranks now, as well as fellow new recruit Mav Weller and exciting draftee Noah Balta. All three will debut in their new colours tonight.

Carlton will debut six players in the navy blue this evening, as top draftee Sam Walsh plays in his first AFL match. Michael Gibbons does too, while a quartet of recruits – Mitch McGovern, Will Setterfield, Nic Newman and Alex Fasolo – also join the squad.

The biggest names lacking from the teams? Matthew Kreuzer isn’t out there tonight for the Blues, while Brandon Ellis and Josh Caddy are among the most notable names not appearing on Richmond’s team list.

Prediction
In 2018’s corresponding feature, Carlton got off to a barnstorming start, slamming home five majors quicker than the yellow and black could utter the words “Hell yeah, we’re the current premiers”. And though Richmond fans no longer claim that title, Brendon Bolton’s men will be hoping to replicate that start, but hold their lead a little longer, this time around.

I can’t say I’m particularly confident that’ll happen, though. Richmond will win tonight, by around six goals.

Richmond Tigers by 38 points.
