Geelong captain Joel Selwood becomes the longest-serving captain in VFL/AFL history when he leads the Cats onto the MCG for the 227th time to face Collingwood. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:25pm (AEDT).
Carlton legend Stephen Kernahan’s record of 226 games in charge has lasted for 25 years, but ‘Sticks’ will be on hand in a ceremony at the MCG to hand the baton to the Cats champion.
Selwood has become one of the most decorated player in the game’s history, winning three premierships, six All Australian nods and three best and fairests, all with a reputation as the most fearless player going around. However, one thing that eludes him is a flag as captain, and a win tonight would set the Cats back on track to achieving that after defeat to Sydney in Round 2.
One of the surprise stories of the early rounds, the Magpies are 2-0 in a dream start to Craig McRae’s tenure. Playing fast, aggressive footy, their brand of ball movement could trouble the Cats on the counterattack, just as the Swans did.
Defender Brayden Maynard’s return from suspension gives the Pies’ backline a much-needed boost to take on power pair Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron, who loom as game-breakers.
