Collingwood Magpies vs Melbourne Demons: AFLW live scores, blog

Match result:

In breezy conditions at Victoria Park, the Melbourne Demons have defeated the Collingwood Magpies by 17-points on Saturday afternoon.

Melbourne dominated across the oval all afternoon, well on top in disposals, the inside 50 count and on the scoreboard.

It may have been level at two behinds apiece at the first break, but the Demons were well in front and were rewarded in the second term.

Elise O’Dea (26 disposals, five tackles, one goal) was best on ground, while Karen Paxman (18 disposals, four behinds) also combined well with dominant ruck Lauren Pearce (21 hit outs, 16 disposals, one goal).

Tyla Hanks also hit the board with a goal, as Melbourne stretched out to a strong lead in the final term.

It was a one-woman show for the Pies, with Ash Brazill everywhere around the ground, racking up 23 disposals, three tackles, an unsuccessful snap at goal and evening going into the ruck at one point.

Steph Chiocci (11 disposals, 5 tackles) tried her best to get things going for her side, while Sarah D’Arcy was influential in her eight disposals taking the game on through half forward.

Sarah Dargan scored the Pies’ only goal, it came late in the fourth quarter, but won’t mask the otherwise dull performance by Collingwood.

The Magpies lost Emma Grant early in the match to an AC joint injury, scans will confirm how serious the injury is for the vice-captain.

Next up for the Demons is a trip north to face the Brisbane Lions, while Collingwood will travel west for a match with the Fremantle Dockers.

Final score
Collingwood Magpies 1.3.9
Melbourne Demons 3.8.26

Last weekend in the opening game of AFLW 2019, Collingwood lost to new kids on the block, Geelong, by one point at GMHBA Stadium, Geelong.

In a fluctuating affair, the Magpies appeared to be the superior side in patches, but couldn’t put it together for more than that and went scoreless in the final term, allowing the Cats to edge ahead by one.

Sophie Alexander’s night ended shortly after she had kicked the opening goal of the match, taken from the ground concussed from a stray Sharni-Layton-arm.

Out at Casey Fields on Sunday, Melbourne went down by four points to a fighting Fremantle side, who got their first away win in the AFLW competition.

On a sweltering Melbourne afternoon, the Demons allowed the visitors to kick the last three goals to take a thrilling victory.

It was a high scoring affair – the second-highest aggregate score in AFLW history – and was one of the more free-flowing, skilful games of the round.

A five-goal to nothing third quarter got the Dees back in the game, but they couldn’t continue this brilliance in the final term and fell just short.

There are forced changes to both sides following injuries in round one.

Sophie Alexander (concussion) and Kirsty Stratton (broken hand) will miss for the Magpies.

2018 draft pick and young forward Katie Lynch will debut this weekend, while Eliza Hynes is also in the side, named in the centre.

The Demons lose Shae Sloane to a torn ACL suffered early on debut and have also omitted Claudia Whitfort, a Round 1 debutant.

No-fear pair Ainslie Kemp and Ashleigh Guest come into the side for the important clash.

With both sides losing their round one contest, they’ll be looking to jump-start their campaigns with a win at Victoria Park.

Prediction
Collingwood’s defence is solid with the likes of Ash Brazill and Emma Grant guarding goal, but they will be tested by an exciting and opportunistic Demons’ forward line.

Pleased with their attacking effort last week, if Melbourne can tighten up their defence, even just a little, they should get the win here.

Melbourne by 13 points.

The siren goes to signal the end of the third term, Lauren Pearce just runs out of time in her chance to put her second goal on the board. It was a scrappy quarter, neither team able to hit the scoreboard with a major, just the single behind kicked by Hore for the Demons. Brazill was still in everything and even attempted the ruck in her forward half! O’Dea was kept to just one third term disposal, while Emonson got in amongst it and is up to 14 disposals for the game. 15 minutes to go, you’d have to think Melbourne hold on from here? Collingwood 0.2. 2 Melbourne 2.5. 17
