The day we have all been waiting for is here! The Collingwood Magpies take on the Richmond Tigers in a massive clash at the MCG to resume the 2020 AFL season. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:40pm (AEST).
This game has been talked about as the one that could both restart the season and complete it when the grand final gets here. These two premiership favourites and heavyweights of the competition go head to head tonight and will be striving for a win after their extended breaks.
Both sides come in with a different style of footy. Richmond typically like to go for longer kicks and move the ball directly and quickly while Collingwood is a side that likes to build up their attacking play with shorter, deliberate kicks, then faster play once they are in the forward half. The Pies plays a far higher passion game than the Tigers.
Having watched both clubs train during the season break, it’s clear the Richmond forward line of Jack Riewoldt, Tom Lynch and Dustin Martin will be most worth watching. After going goalless in the first game of the season, the pressure will be on Tom Lynch to get on the scoresheet tonight.
Another area to look for is the ruck battle. The last time they met in Round 19, 2019 Ivan Soldo kept Brodie Grundy to just nine disposals while Soldo had ten which might explain Toby Nankervis’ omission from the Tigers’ side.
The changes for Richmond from Round 1 see Bacher Houli and Jack Higgins return from injuries. They replace Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis.
Higgins’ is a wonderful story, having come back from brain surgery last season which threatened the future of his AFL career.
For Collingwood, Darcy Cameron comes in for his first game at the Magpies to play in the forward line and give Grundy a rest in the ruck. He replaces Mason Cox who misses with minor knee injury concerns.
Predictions
Richmond’s move to drop Toby Nankervis is a bold one, considering he could challenge Grundy for All Australian honours this season. If Grundy dominates this game against Soldo, Collingwood will win, particularly given grand final sensation Marlion Pickett is the Tigers’ second ruckman.
Collingwood by 8 points.
