Remarkably, the Saints, despite enduring a series of humiliating losses this season, sit just a game and a half outside the eight. A win today could whittle that down to just two premiership points and percentage to GWS; they’re still in the finals race up to their ears.
Hope was rekindled with a stunning thrashing of the off-the-boil Tigers, in Round 15, holding the reigning premiers to just two goals for the entire match. With the Pies having at times struggled to put a score on the board under Nathan Buckley, Brett Ratten will be confident his unheralded backline can do the job again.
The Pies looked to have turned a corner with an upset win over Melbourne in Nathan Buckley’s final game as coach; but in Robert Harvey’s first as caretaker, they quickly fell back to earth. A narrow loss to the Dockers in Melbourne, who were without Nat Fyfe, was an ordinary way for Harvey to begin his coaching career, and if he has any designs on the top job, he’ll want to make sure there is no repeat.
The return of Jordan de Goey from suspension is a major boost; he had been in scintillating form for the Pies until that incident in Round 13. Meanwhile, at the Saints, Jack Billings returned after being a late withdrawal from their win over Richmond.
