Show Preview

It is that time of the year when the previous year’s grand finalists face off for the first time in the next season proper, with last year’s runners-up Collingwood Magpies hosting the reigning premier West Coast Eagles, live from the MCG. It is so rare that you get a truly classic grand final showpiece event that is decided in the final moments, and for these two sides, having played out such a classic in 2018, they thus developed a rivalry at least in the short-term that will drive the teams that continue to meet.

Collingwood looked brilliant last week.

Actually, they looked menacing, such was the precision, aggression, and clinical nature of their demolition of the Tigers.

You cannot help but wonder if the black and white stripes of the Pies perhaps got a bit of stage fright in that opening Friday night against the Cats, particularly when you consider they lost by a goal.

But against Richmond, the likes of Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott, and that big monster Mason Cox, stepped up and delivered a statement win for the Pies.

Did the Pies choke in last year’s final match, or were they simply run down by a slightly better opponent?

The reason I ask that question is, because whatever the answer, last week the Pies showed that they are not seemingly concerned, and they appear to have moved on.

And to think the Pies welcome Taylor Adams back into this side, and they may still yet see a firing Daniel Wells (if he ever gets fit again) to top off the talent.

Speaking of talent, while West Coast were perhaps lazy in their opening game against the Lions, the Eagles were ferocious against the Giants, in the happy confines of their Perth home.

The argument, or at least the fading myth, that the Eagles can’t perform outside of Perth was categorically lost when the Eagles won when it mattered in last year’s grand final.

The big in this week is that of Andrew Gaff, and how he fits back into a premiership-winning side may be critical to how the Eagles perform in their re-match.

With Luke Shuey and grand final hero Dom Sheed building a solid platform to their season, the addition of Gaff may prove to be the clinching premiership-defending cog in the wheel.

Or it could be the unnecessary addition that throws out the cart.

What an intriguing re-match this happens to be.

For the Eagles, they will be looking for their third win in a row over the Pies at the MCG, which would be a nice little psychological advantage to take into the rest of the season.

Prediction
Mason Cox getting off his suspension was a big deal, and while the Eagles showed their true worth last week, a fit and firing Collingwood outfit at the MCG just leans the contest in the favour of the beaten grand finalist out for revenge.

Pies by 15.
