Harry McKay is back for Carlton just in time to face old rivals Essendon in a Friday night clash between two of the AFL’s biggest teams. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

It’s been a long time since any real success for either of these one-time powerhouses, but the Blues seem on a cusp of a return to greatness after a spectacular start to life under Michael Voss.

The Blues are 8-3 and well and truly in the hunt for a surprise top-four berth, on the back of a brilliant midfield led by Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh, and one of the league’s most dynamic forward lines featuring Charlie Curnow and the returning McKay.

However, they’ll need to cope without star defender Jacob Weitering for the next six weeks, whose shoulder injury against Collingwood proved crucial in a narrow defeat before last week’s bye.

The Bombers, in contrast, have endured a hellish season; plagued by injury and poor form, they sit 16th with a 2-9 record.

There have been few highlights for the Dons thus far in 2022, but with the enigmatic Jake Stringer returning from injury, they’re at least getting their best 22 slowly back together.

Matches between these two sides have been tight in recent years, so despite being warm favourites, the Blues know they can’t simply sit back and expect to cruise to victory under the Friday night lights.
