The Collingwood Magpies and Essendon Bombers will do battle in their traditional Anzac Day clash, and it’s likely to be as tough an encounter as it’s been for years. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).

They have not had the strongest start to their season thus far, but Collingwood nevertheless hold a three win, two loss record.

Last week’s victory was arguably their finest yet this year, with a powerful 62 point win over the up and coming Brisbane Lions showcasing the best work the potent side can do.

Essendon, for their part, began their season rather poorly, but have steadied well in the past three weeks; their last victory an easy win over a lacklustre Kangaroos outfit.

So, then: a matching win-loss record, both coming into form and both coming off big wins against lower ranked sides. Not a lot seperates these two.

Collingwood arguably holds the advantage in midfield and forward power – but Essendon’s proven their no pushover, though: expect Joe Daniher to continue his good form, while Dylan Shiel has been nothing short of sensational in recent matches.

Of course, both teams have been hampered with injury frustrations; with Collingwood particularly vulnerable this week.

They’ve been forced to replace injured duo James Aish and Jamie Elliott, given a concussion and corked buttock respectively. Will Hoskin-Elliott and Levi Greenwood are added to the squad.

Essendon have been more fortunate, with Devon Smith and David Zaharkais returning from injury layoffs. Young pair Brayden Ham and David Parish are dropped.

Prediction
This is as even we’ve seen these two sides heading into an ANZAC clash in years. Collingwood’s have been champions four of the past five years, though, and they’re looking the more powerful side at this moment.

And within the realm of the marquee match, recent form counts for a lot. I’m backing the black and white, but would not be particularly surprised if the men from Tullamarine pull out a victory.

Collingwood by 16 points.
