Show Preview

The biggest home-and-away game on the AFL calendar arrives at the MCG, as Essendon and Collingwood do battle in the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. Join The Roar for live scores from 3:20pm (AEST).

Despite both sides sitting outside the top eight heading into Round 6 AFL action, there is always something special that takes place on ANZAC Day, and this edition of the rivalry will be no different.

Collingwood have impressed many with their play thus far in 2022, yet have just two wins to show for their efforts. After three straight losses, the Magpies need to steady the ship with many still believing they are a chance to play finals and the Bombers have few mulligans left after winning just once in the present season.

That triumph came against the Crows in Round 4, and last week’s loss to the Dockers has put the players and coach on full alert.

A repeat of the finals appearance of 2021 looks highly unlikely for the Bombers at this stage of this season. Their defence is ponderous at times, and their contest work well below par. Essentially the Dons do not look tough enough, nor skilful enough when the ball is in their attacking zone, and the Pies have looked a far more impressive unit in season 2022.

Tradition says this will be another epic ANZAC Day clash and with neither side in the most sparkling of form, points could well be at a premium. The Pies will enter the match as clear favourites, yet if there ever was a fixture guaranteed to produce drama, this is certainly the one.

Prediction

After the poor effort Essendon produced in Round 5, Ben Rutten will demand a response from his team. He will undoubtedly get it with the sense of occasion always destined to add another layer to the contest.

However, any improvement will unlikely be enough when it comes to stealing the four points away from Collingwood. The Pies have a little more class and should use it to secure a strong win at the MCG.

Collingwood by 26 points.
