The Essendon Bombers face the Fremantle Dockers at Marvel Stadium in an important Round 9 AFL clash. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:25pm (AEST).
Struck by injuries, Essendon face a mountain over the next few weeks; with tough matches against the Tigers, Carlton and Hawthorn looming. However, the task of toppling the much improved Fremantle is their first order of business.
The Dockers come off disappointing losses to Richmond and Adelaide, yet began the season as something of a revelation.
Ross Lyon will be looking for an immediate return to form from the men in purple.
Rory Lobb has begun to throw his weight around, Stephen Hill and Nat Fyfe look ever dangerous in the midfield and Matthew Taberner is enjoying a breakout season in the west.
With few changes to the team that pushed the Tigers most of the way last weekend, a strong performance will be expected today.
The Bombers lose Devon Smith and Orazio Fantasia (I hope I said that correctly), both added to a long line of wounded troops; many of whom will not be back for some period of time.
The red and black still look hesitant and John Worsfold has only managed to extract inconsistent performances from a side that began the season in disastrous fashion.
It could be a death knelling of the Bombers’ season should they fail to overcome the Dockers in this one. At 3-6, their season will be on tenderhooks.
The Dockers will look to move to 5-4 and confirm their current place in a crowded top eight. With a clash against the Lions on the horizon, Lyon will see this as an opportunity to string a few wins together to make up for the eight points dropped over the past fortnight.
Prediction
Fremantle should win this one, despite the Bombers enjoying the home ground advantage. The Dockers have shown real and sustainable improvement in the first third of the season and with the Bombers battered, bruised and depleted, they should be able to grind out a low scoring victory.
Fremantle by 2 goals.
