Round 12 finishes with a bang as Fremantle, fresh off ending Melbourne’s 17-match winning streak, face the presumptive next-best side in the AFL, Brisbane, at home. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 5:20pm (AEST).

The Dockers had already proved a legitimate top four contender in 2022, but their shock win over the Demons in Melbourne last week made it official: Flagmantle is a real possibility.

With a miserly defence, an underrated but brilliant midfield and small options aplenty up forward, the Dockers caused an injury-plagued Dees outfit havoc with a statement-making win, quite possibly their finest home-and-away triumph.

Things don’t get any easier, though, with Freo needing to back it up against the second-placed Lions. Making it even tougher, spearhead Matt Taberner will miss with a back injury sustained late against the Demons, while first-choice players Heath Chapman and Michael Walters will also be absent with hamstring injuries of varying significance. Nat Fyfe, too, has been sent to the WAFL to make his long-awaited return from a series of back injuries.

The Lions, in contrast, have only gotten stronger at the selection table, with star midfielder Hugh McCluggage back after missing their win over GWS with a hamstring injury of his own.

The Lions have lost only twice this season, and both were by single-figure margins. Up until Freo’s shock win last week, they were clearly Melbourne’s biggest challenger for the premiership, and know a win here on the road would confirm that.

The Lions are averaging a whopping 12 points a game more than their nearest rival – Sydney – but have shown a tendency to leak goals too, as they did against the Giants in the first quarter. While they were able to recover, such a lapse could prove crucial against a defence as miserly as the Dockers’.
