A rejuvenated Fremantle Dockers outfit host last year’s grand finalists the Collingwood Magpies in what could be an exciting pre-season hit-out at Joondalup’s HBF Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:40pm (AEDT).

Collingwood made a rapid ascendancy into premiership contention last season, making it all the way to the final Saturday in September. Alas, they failed to top the West Coast Eagles.

But they’re back today, against their grand final opponents’ chief rivals: Fremantle, who for their part weathered injury and ineptitude to record an eight-win season that never reached glamorous heights.

Both teams made some major personnel changes last year, with Fremantle extensively changing their team. Gone is Lachie Neale, in are talented forwards Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb.

Those two acquisitions will play in this afternoon’s clash for their debuts in purple, as will 2018 draftee Brett Bewley and former Bomber Travis Colyer.

These additions add a long-missing flair to Fremantle’s often maligned forward structure, so this’ll be the first chance to see just how well that newly rejuvenated structure performs.

Fremantle are missing some important players, though. Nat Fyfe’s not playing – out with injury – whilst fellow midfield stalwart Connor Blakey will also miss, as will Aaron Sandilands and his protege Sean Darcy. Add the removal of Neale from the squad’s midfield, the midfield potentially looks much weaker than their optimal side.

Collingwood, for their part, have produced a squad that features thirteen players from last September’s grand final side. Among those missing are Jordan De Goey, Mason Cox, Adam Treloar and Jeremy Howe. They will, however, debut Jordan Roughead in the black and white for the first time, and (re-)debut Dayne Beams in his arrival back at the club. Talented draftee Isaac Raynor will also play.

Prediction
This is a hard pick. Both sides have plenty of talent playing today, but both are also missing plenty of their best and most optimal squads. Collingwood just seems that little more settled, though, and Fremantle’s much-hyped forward structure is yet to be tested properly, so I’ll be reluctantly tipping the visitors. By a small margin.

Collingwood by 14 points.
