The Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles do battle in what looks like being a derby to remember. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:10pm (AEST).
The derby always has the potential to explode into one of the most gripping and tight encounters of the AFL season. Fremantle are over-achieving in 2019 and sitting just inside the eight after 15 rounds.
The Eagles sit third and are starting to find form despite some inconsistencies in their play. This edition of the derby has the potential to become something special.
Despite a close and dramatic loss in Round 15 to the Blues, Fremantle are impressing under Ross Lyon’s guidance this season and look like genuine finals’ contenders should they be able to stay healthy and have an ounce of luck or two along the way.
After multiple seasons of rebuild, Lyon now has what he wants and the returns of Aaron Sandilands and Rory Lobb add important cogs back into the machine that he has attempted to build.
Despite the absence of Jesse Hogan, the Dockers look powerful across the park and will most likely push the Eagles every step of the way today. Brad Hill, Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters are pinching Brownlow points from each other most weeks and combating their run through the centre of the field will be vital for the Eagles to claim victory.
West Coast scraped home against a plucky Hawthorn last weekend in a performance that was far from special, yet one that did register another win at the MCG; a place they have struggled to conquer in the past.
The reigning premiers did conquer it last season on the biggest day in football when they claimed the title and with consistent wins there, can obliterate any belief that it could be their Achilles heel in September.
Nick Naitanui made a successful return last weekend and with Willie Rioli, Liam Ryan and Elliot Yeo in top form, the Eagles are starting to remind everyone exactly why they are the reigning premiers.
Prediction
West Coast need this game right now. If anything can play the role of smelling salts to a Western Australian AFL team it is the derby. Fremantle are a solid team yet may struggle against the multi-faceted attack possessed by the Eagles. If the nominal visitors bring their best, they will win. Anything less and the Dockers will be ready to bounce.
West Coast by 8 points.
