It’s a pre-season Derby over in the West – Mandurah to be precise – as the Fremantle Dockers take on the West Coast Eagles at Rushton Oval. Join The Roar for live scores and blog from 7:10pm AEDT.

While derbies are always competitive, the story within this match will be the return of Andrew Brayshaw to face the Eagles and, specifically, Andrew Gaff.

Both are selected for this, and expect Gaff to single Brayshaw out before the bounce for an apologetic handshake and cold comfort for breaking his jaw savagely last season.

As the players complete their warm-ups the cameras will be trained on Gaff and Brayshaw to see what happens.

Despite what shapes as a warm welcome for Brayshaw, this game is a baptism of fire for Fremantle’s season as they now face their second 2018 Grand finalist in consecutive weeks.

Their week 1 stoush with Collingwood ended poorly with a 27-point loss after running a lead for much of the first half. They’ll be eager to show improvement against the premiers and fierce rival the West Coast Eagles.

The Eagles, on the other hand had a comfortable 34-point win over Geelong, where Dom Sheed starred and Jack Darling kicked five.

Oscar Allen also excited with three goals in his second season after being an early second-round pick in 2017.

But the real story in that game (as well as this one!) was the return of Andrew Gaff after his season long suspension and “will he won’t he” trade period which ended with a decision to stay with the Eagles and shun the advances of North Melbourne and St Kilda.

With 27 disposals and eight marks Gaff was better for the run and adding a fit Gaff to their finals winning squad makes the Eagles a tough proposition indeed.

Fremantle’s new faces had mixed reviews after week 1. GWS rescue Rory Lobb competed all day in the ruck and finished with 20 disposals, while their Lachie Neale-free midfield did an ok job with young Victorian Darcy Tucker putting his hand up with 19 disposals and 13 tackles.

Brad Hill, Andrew Brayshaw (a welcome sight after his season-ending injury) and Ed Langdon also stepped up with nearly 100 disposals between them.

On the other hand Jesse Hogan failed to excite. The Dockers have lacked a decent forward since Matt Pavlich’s retirement, and a lot is expected of Hogan to become the target man Ross Lyon is desperate for.

His return in JLT week one of six disposals and two marks was hardly the stuff of legend, but this battle with the “traditional” foe should start to get Hogan’s juices flowing.

Freo also welcome Reece Conca, a key free agent pick up, for this Eagles game.

For the Eagles it’s another chance to see former Saint ruckman Tom Hickey – recruited to bridge the loss of Scott Lycett to Port – play tandem with Nathan Vardy, while lesser known youngsters Allen, Jacob Brander, Jack Petruccelle and Francis Watson will all get more chances to shine.

Watson, a mature ager from the Kimberley who joined the Eagles as Next Gen Academy selection in 2017, had an outstanding game against the Cats, picking up 17 and 10 tackles. He’ll definitely be one to watch for tonight.

Prediction
Both sides have picked reasonably strong sides, full of veterans as well as noobs and the cream of their teens.

Fremantle since the 2013 Grand Final seem to be a continuous work in progress for Ross Lyon, whereas the Eagles have the form and momentum to win this game, and probably with a few goals up their sleeves.

The Eagles by 18 points.
