The second week of the JLT Community series continues with a Thursday night clash between Geelong Cats and Essendon Bombers at GMHBA Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 7:10pm (AEDT) on Thursday.
The Cats get a home game after travelling west last week against the reigning premiers, while the Bombers have their second successive Thursday night match after an unsuspecting loss to Carlton last week at Ikon Park.
Both teams lost last week (Geelong by 34, Essendon by 9 points), however, should be fielding relatively strong sides as they look to gain some momentum towards Round 1.
Geelong will be hopeful of less reliance on Mitch Duncan and Patrick Dangerfield this week as the return of Gary Ablett Jr and Tom Hawkins (gastro) in the forward line.
The Cats but would be pleased with the consistent improvement from Brandan Parfitt, Charlie Constable and Tom Stewart last week. Harry Taylor has been named but will need to be cleared of concussion after a head knock in the first quarter against the Eagles.
The Cats will still be missing Zach Tuohy, while Zac Smith has also been ruled out with a knee complaint, as well as the management of Jake Kolodjashnij.
An impressive run through the middle saw Andrew McGrath as best afield last week, thanks to the service from former Fremantle ruckman Zac Clarke in new colours for the red and black.
New recruit, Dylan Shiel, Orazio Fantasia (both quad injuries) are also lining up, as well as the Dons welcoming the return of David Myers and Tom Bellchambers in their side.
Brayden Ham will also debut after being drafted late in the 2018 draft. Sam Draper gets a run this week also to boost the side.
Prediction
It’s only pre-season, but in the early days it will be interesting to see how much of an effect it is for the Dons to have lost to Carlton (and the first time the Blues have scored 100 points in four years).
Geelong will only have a six-day recovery after travelling to suburban northern Perth, but should have the run in their legs now after blowing out the cobwebs.
Cats by 11 points.

Geelong Cats grab a JLT Series victory as Essendon Bombers go winless in their final hitout before the AFL season. The Joel Selwood-led Geelong Cats have defeated the Essendon Bombers by 28 points on Thursday night at GMHBA Stadium. The Cats kicked 15.11.101 in a free-flowing contest against the Bombers' 11.7.73. New recruit Gary Rohan kicked 4 goals, while Selwood gathered 38 disposals, 11 marks and 7 tackles in a convincing display. After the first quarter, the Bombers were playing catchup for most of the evening with centre clearances being free-flowing for both sides. The Cats led the disposal count 405-366, marks 119-64, but the Bombers led tackles 79-50. Another arrival at Kardinia Park, Luke Dahlhaus had an impressive game with 25 disposals and a goal in what could be a return to his 2016 premiership form. Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield gathered 30 disposals and a goal, youngster Jack Henry had 20 kicks and 1 handball, while Tim Kelly had 28 disposals as well. Key forward Tom Hawkins led the way in attack with 2 goals and looked a dominating presence inside 50 alongside Esava Ratugolea's 2 majors. Tom Atkins, Jordan Clark, and Charlie Constable also impressed for the Cats. Dyson Heppell (21 disposals) and new recruit Dylan Shiel (25 disposals) led the way for the Dons in their second loss of the season. A quiet night by reigning best and fairest Devon Smith (15 disposals) saw a first for the preseason with the new rule interpretation seeing him give away a free kick for trying to take a mark with his studs out. Although there were highlights from Joe Daniher's big marking abilitiy, he failed to hit the scoreboard with a major. The Cats will look to the first Friday night of the season in two weeks time against grand finalists, Collingwood at the MCG, while the Bombers will be hoping to get some form by Round 1 against the GIANTS in what will be the return of Sheil against his former club.
