The Gold Coast Suns face possibly the toughest task in the AFL right now: a trip to GMHBA Stadium to tackle the red-hot Geelong Cats. Tune into Saturday afternoon footy with live scores on The Roar from 2:10pm (AEDT).

After a sluggish start, the Cats have warmed into 2021 nicely. Sitting third with a 6-3 record, you suspect the only way is up for Chris Scott’s men.

Their Round 9 win over St Kilda by 21 points was a far cry from their dominant wins over premiership contenders West Coast and Richmond, but the Cats will be pleased they were able to cope with the Saints’ fearsome pressure. Welcoming back Jake Kolodjashnij and Luke Dahlhaus from injury, the team is as strong now as they’ve been all season.

The Suns have taken some strides this year, but a 73-point loss to crosstown rivals Brisbane in the QClash was a ‘back to square one’ moment. Now in his fourth season at the helm, coach Stuart Dew hasn’t even come close to taking them to a maiden finals berth, and pressure is sure to come if he can’t spark a resurgence from somewhere.

The Suns have travelled down to the Cattery six times in their history, with three resulting in 100+ point defeats. It’s far from a happy hunting ground for the long-time battlers, though the return of midfielder Touk Miller from suspension should help.

Journeyman ruckman Zac Smith comes in for his first game of the season, too. Having started his career at the Suns with 65 games from 2011-15, he moved to Geelong for four seasons and 50 further games, before being traded back to the Suns. Against Geelong’s famously fragile ruck department, he couldn’t ask for a better chance to succeed.
