One of the great modern rivalries writes another chapter tonight, as the Geelong Cats host the Hawthorn Hawks at GMHBA Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).

Geelong, the reigning minor premiers, enter this match as favourites, but will be tested by a side who always lift for this fixture. The Hawks have won three of the last four meetings in this rivalry.

The Cats have had some time to think things through after they came off second-best in their season-opener against the Giants. Some star midfielders struggled to get into the game, with Joel Selwood managing only 16 disposals and Cam Guthrie only having 11. They also gave away too many easy shots at goal, allowing GWS to kick 17.3 in a 32-point loss.

Hawthorn, on the other hand, started off 2020 with a bang, taking down last year’s surprise packets Brisbane by 28 points at the MCG. Chad Wingard had his best performance in a Hawks jumper with 20 disposals and three goals, while the ageless Shaun Burgoyne and Luke Breust also chipped in with three majors.

This will be the first meeting between these two sides in Geelong since Round 3, 2006, while also breaking a run of 27 straight matches between the clubs at the MCG. The Hawks won that ’06 clash by 52 points in a massive upset, sending the high-flying Cats down a spiral that saw them finish tenth. Gary Ablett is the only player from that match still in the AFL.
