Just five games are left to decide the 2019 Premiers, a title only one team can hold.

Geelong had a poor start against a firing Collingwood forward line on Friday night.

The move of Mark Blicavs into the ruck left the defensive line short in the first half, while Esava Ratugolea’s move into the middle in the second half made the forward line a little too predictable.

Despite a late surge from the Cats, the Magpies never really looked like giving up their lead and held on by 10 points.

West Coast had a vastly different evening 24 hours prior, celebrating a huge 55-point victory in their elimination final against Essendon.

It was a dominant display by the reigning premiers, who played their last home game for the season and soared into finals week two with four-goal outings from Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps.

The Eagles sweated on the Match Review Officer’s assessment of Nic Naitanui’s retaliation to having his hair pulled, however a $1500 sanction – down to $1000 with an early plea – was deemed sufficient.

Last Friday night’s loss got worse for Geelong, with Mitch Duncan and Gary Rohan both succumbing to knee injuries.

Rhys Stanley has been recalled to the team after his late withdrawal for the “weather conditions”; he faces a huge battle against the duo of Nic Naitanui and Tom Hickey.

Cameron Guthrie also returns after calf soreness ruled him out of the qualifying final.

The build-up to the semi-final has been marred with controversy, as Willie Rioli becomes the subject of an ASADA and AFL investigation.

Rioli has been provisionally suspended as of Wednesday evening, with regards to an ASADA drug test from August 20.

The premiership-winning forward being stood down opens the door for Jack Petruccelle to make his stamp on the AFL Finals series.

The last time these teams met was in round six and it was the Cats who smashed the Eagles by 58-points.

Geelong’s very strong first half of the season has been regularly spoken about and this victory fell during that time; since the bye though, they’ve been up and down and will find things tougher this weekend.

Gary Ablett had a day out with 28 disposals and two goals, and will be looking to return to good form after a quiet performance in last weekend’s lost.

It’s sudden death this weekend, who will take on Richmond in the preliminary final?

Prediction
Geelong have gone loss, win, loss, win since the bye and on that pattern are due for a win this weekend.

If you watched the matches in finals’ week one though, you – and many others – are likely thinking there can be only one outcome: a West Coast victory.

The Eagles are in better ‘form’, but the events of the past 48 hours could spell trouble.

Gut instinct says West Coast will remain alive in the finals series, but have us on the edge of our seats for a thrilling finish.

West Coast by one point.
