All eyes will be on Queensland for the latest edition of the QClash between the Gold Coast Suns and the Brisbane Lions. Tune in for live scores on The Roar from 4:35pm (AEST).
The Lions have dominated this rivalry in recent times, winning six of seven clashes since Chris Fagan took over as coach at the beginning of 2017. In that time, the Lions have surged from wooden spooners to premiership contenders, while the Suns remain a source of frustration for fans.
The Lions are one of the AFL’s most in-form sides, having won their last four matches without too many difficulties. Given they face reigning premiers Richmond and the rampant Melbourne in their next three weeks, banking the four points here could be crucial for their top-four chances.
The Suns have made a habit of starting seasons well under Stuart Dew, and while a 3-5 record doesn’t look flash on paper, their percentage of 101 is far more impressive.
Last week’s 9-point loss to St Kilda, having led for much of the match, was a bitter pill to swallow for the team, and probably sums up where they’re at at the moment. An upset win over their cross-town rivals would be a welcome sign the Suns can challenge for a finals berth as early as this year. Losing gun midfielder Touk Miller through suspension, though, is a hammer blow.
Miller has been at the centre of some fiery recent encounters with Lions skipper Dayne Zorko, adding some badly needed spice to the rivalry. With him gone, it will be up to his Suns teammates to give this game life.
