It’s the game that nearly didn’t happen when the Gold Coast Suns take on the Hawthorn Hawks in the familiar surrounds of… the SCG. Catch up with the match with live scores on The Roar from 7:40pm (AEST).

This match caused the AFL plenty of headaches during the week. Originally slated for Darwin as the headline act of Indigenous Round, the Northern Territory’s border closure to Victorians meant the Hawks were unable to get to the Top End for the match. With the Suns’ main home ground of Metricon Stadium also out of the question due to Queensland following suit, the game has landed in Sydney – though not before a postponement was suggested.

The Suns have flirted at times with serious improvement in 2021, upsetting finals hopeful Sydney and pushing a number of quality teams all the way. However, at 3-7 and sitting 15th, they need premiership points desperately, and nothing short of that against the struggling Hawks will be satisfactory.

The Hawks continue to battle in 2021, the issues facing their ageing list leading to suggestions star players, including Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell, could be offloaded for a stronger draft hand. No doubt Alastair Clarkson will push back against such a response, but only wins will silence the critics.

In happier news, Shaun Burgoyne is back for Indigenous Round, the veteran Hawk moving ever closer to the 400-game milestone. He’ll want nothing more than to celebrate it in style here.
