It’s the end of the road for Leon Cameron as the GWS Giants coach has his final match in charge, looking for one last win over Carlton. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 3:20pm (AEST).

Carlton will be looking to reclaim its place in the top eight on the AFL ladder when they travel to Sydney off the back of two strong wins against the Kangaroos and Crows over the last fortnight.

The mid-field brutality of the Blues has been impressive to watch thus far in 2022 and will be required again against a talented Giants group that is yet to find its best form this season.

Leon Cameron’s resignation after a decade at the help in Sydney will give his team plenty of motivation to win this one for him, yet recent form suggests that may well be far more difficult to achieve than the fairy tale writers would have. The Blues know there is plenty at stake for them as they seek to stay in touch with the competition front runners.

Team news sees the Blues dealt a cruel blow with the loss of Harry McKay, with Charlie Curnow forced to now step into the key role up front for them. Jack Martin remains out for Carlton yet the returns of Lachie Plowman and George Hewett are welcome ones.

The Giants have named an almost unchanged team to the one beaten embarrassingly by the Cats last weekend, aside from the inclusion of Conor Stone. With the players keen to send off their departing coach with an emotional victory, the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Tom Greene and Toby Green will be vital should the Giants hope to claim just their third win of the season.

Prediction

Carlton has solid form on the board and Greater Western Sydney has almost none of which to speak. In spite of the obvious tendency to side with the emotion of Cameron’s departure and the likely bump in performance of the playing group, the Blues deserve favouritism, and with their newfound fortitude, should find a way past the Giants on their home deck.

The bookies are leaning the other way and there might be some profit to be made if Carlton turn up with their usual game face well and truly in place.

Carlton by 14 points.
