Match result:

Tayla Harris and Madison Prespakis have kicked three goals each to lead Carlton to their first win of the 2019 AFLW season.

The Blues got a fast start on the Giants by kicking the first two goals of the game and then never looked back. While the Giants were able to improve as the match went on, they never got ahold of the lead at any point.

Although they’re only at 1-2, being in the weaker ‘B’ conference means Carlton could still make a strong charge towards finals if this starts a roll of hot form from them – though they look likely to miss Harris next week after a heavy bump on Pepa Randall in the final quarter.

The Giants meanwhile after being talked up as a premiership contender find themselves at 0-3 and will probably need to win every game they have left if they’re going to have any hope of playing finals.

Final score
GWS Giants 5.6.36
Carlton Blues 10.5.65

Neither of these sides has exactly been terrible so far in season 2019, yet both of them find themselves with an 0-2 record after two weeks and desperately needing a win if they’re going to keep their hopes of playing finals alive.

The new conference system brought in by the AFL for the women’s competition has been widely criticised for being both unbalanced and unnecessary, and the fact that after two rounds every team in Conference A had a better record that the best team in Conference B underlined the popular concerns.

However the conference system may well work in the favour of GWS and Cartlon who are both in the ‘weak’ B conference, and thus despite dropping their first two games both still have a realistic chance of qualifying for finals.

Brisbane and Geelong are leading the conference at present with a win each so if they can get some good form rolling, it won’t take the winless Giants or Blues too long to catch up – though whichever side loses today might be on the verge of kissing their finals hopes goodbye.

The Giants had a narrow loss to Brisbane last round before being thoroughly outclassed by North Melbourne in the wet in Round 2. Worse yet, they lost Nicola Barr to a one-game suspension and also will be missing Emma Swanson this week through injury.

Carlton appeared not to have made much progress on their 2018 wooden spoon season in Round 1 when they were blown away by the Kangaroos, but their impressive if ultimately unsuccessful effort against Adelaide last week suggests this side can be competitive yet.

Prediction
The Blues get back Tayla Harris this week while GWS have lost some key players in Barr and Swanson. This match could certainly go either way, but I’ll tip Carlton to get the win on the road.
