GWS Giants rising star Jacob Hopper plays his 100th game as they look to regain their place in the top eight with a win over the Gold Coast Suns. Follow along with events from Ballarat right here on The Roar with live scores from 12:40pm (AEST) as Round 16 begins.

Sydney’s ongoing COVID-19 outbreak has forced this game into country Victoria, where the Giants have never played. The Suns have only fronted up to Mars Stadium once themselves, for a narrow loss to the Western Bulldogs back in 2018.

The Giants’ form has fluctuated wildly in recent weeks, managing just two points combined out of games against lowly Hawthorn and North Melbourne, but managing to topple premiership contender Melbourne at the MCG last week. Having headed into the round in eighth, a finals spot is theirs to lose, but Fremantle and St Kilda’s victories yesterday have dialled the pressure up to 11.

The Suns returned to the winners’ list with a stunning defeat of the struggling Richmond last week, lifting some of the mounting pressure on the club and coach Stuart Dew after several horror weeks. However, they haven’t beaten their fellow expansion side since all the way back in 2014 – when Guy McKenna was still in charge.

Hugh Greenwood returns from the Suns to give their midfield some extra oomph, replacing the suspended Josh Corbett; while the Giants have made a statement at the selection table, dropping out of form forward Jeremy Finlayson. However, high-profile recruit Jesse Hogan returns for just his third game at the club.
