It’s a home game like no other for the GWS Giants as Sydney’s COVID-19 outbreak forces them to the MCG to “host” the Hawthorn Hawks. Follow along on the first of this Sunday afternoon triple-header with live scores on The Roar from 1:10pm (AEST).

Richmond’s upset loss on Friday night means the Giants can enter the top eight for the first time this year with a win. It would be a fitting reward for a side which has surged back into contention, after having the bottom seemingly fall out of the joint with a nightmare 0-3 start to the season.

Last week’s comfortable win over Carlton featured starring roles from midfield aces Lachie Whitfield and Tim Taranto, while five goals from Jeremy Finlayson and four from acting captain Toby Greene ensured the Giants’ firepower up forward was too much for the Blues to handle. It was also the Giants’ first win of the season without bullocking ruckman Shane Mumford; perhaps because of it, they’ve opted to trust emerging duo Matt Flynn and Kieren Briggs with the responsibility again, with the big Mummy named in the emergencies.

The Hawks have improved significantly since their Round 12 bye, stunning Sydney at the SCG before pushing Essendon all the way in Tasmania last week. Now, buoyed by this extra “home” game, plenty of chips have already fallen their way as Alastair Clarkson prepares to ambush another NSW-based team.

One big chip went the other way during the week, however; running defender Jarman Impey suffered a serious ankle injury at training that could well sideline him for the remainder of the season. It’s a big loss for the Hawks, as the experienced half-back was one of their most important distributors from defensive 50.

No crisis comes without opportunity, though, as Impey’s absence means their prized pick six from last year’s draft, Denver Grainger-Barras, will make his debut. Already arguably the best name in footy, can the hyphenated Hawk make an impact in his first game in the big time?
