Match result:

The Melbourne Demons have defeated the GWS Giants by 39 points at Blacktown International Sportspark on a hot Sunday afternoon.

It was a tight opening term to start this one in Sydney, both teams scoring just the one goal with two behinds.

Melbourne kicked things up a notch in the second with two goals, five behinds, to the Giants one point and held a 17-point lead at half-time.

A much more even third quarter, with a goal each way and the lead remained at 16-point at the final break.

Melbourne kicked away in the last with a four-goal fourth term and finished 39-point winners at Blacktown.

A win on the road important in keeping their season alive.

Alicia Eva racked up 20 disposals in the middle with Alyce Parker (20 disposals), while Cora Staunton (16 disposals, 4 tackles) worked her way up the ground to try and help her team in the right direction, but failed to hit the scoreboard.

Maddison Gay was brilliant for Melbourne, picking up 19 disposals and hitting the scoreboard with a goal. Karen Paxman was also instrumental to the Demons’ victory, with 18 disposals and a goal as well.

Tegan Cunningham kicked three goals for Melbourne, her height and marking ability too good for the Giants defenders.

The Giants had a late change with Ingrid Nielsen coming into the side for Erin McKinnon, ruled out with a thumb injury.

Demon defender Meg Downie went off after a head knock but came back on to finish the game.

Final score
GWS Giants 2.6.18
Melbourne Demons 8.9.57

Round five of the AFLW season continues on Sunday with the Greater Western Sydney Giants hosting the Melbourne Demons at Blacktown. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 2:05pm AEDT.

The Giants finally broke through last weekend to put their first win on the board in 2019, holding on for a nine-point victory over Collingwood.

In blustery conditions, scoring favoured one end of the ground with all but one behind scored in that direction.

The Giants found a way to hold on to the win, as the Magpies finished in a flurry with the wind in the final term.

Melbourne battled it out with their conference leaders the North Melbourne Kangaroos and went down by just four points in another thriller.

The Demons stole the lead twice in the second half, but a controversial free kick awarded to the Roos’ Emma King allowed the tall-forward to kick her third and snatch a fifth straight victory.

Alisha Newman kicked two second-half goals for Melbourne, while Karen Paxman and Lily Mithen continued to rack up disposals in the middle.

Melbourne were impressive, but really needed the win; they now sit outside the top two of Conference A by a game and percentage.

Both GWS and Melbourne currently sit fourth in their respective conferences, both still within striking distance of the finals if they can put a win on the board this weekend.

Two changes for each side this weekend.

Erin McKinnon returns from illness for the Giants, while forward Britt Perry has been selected for her second game of the season.

Ingrid Nielsen and Maddy Collier have been omitted from the side.

For Melbourne, Madeleine Guerin and Brooke Patterson will play their first matches in 2019, while Ash Woodland and Ainslie Kemp have been omitted for this weekend’s trip north.

The last time these two sides played was over a year ago in round one, season 2018, and Melbourne took a six-point victory at Casey Fields.

Prediction
GWS found a way to win last weekend against the Pies, but it’ll be tough to do the same against a strong, high scoring Melbourne outfit who have only lost in tight and controversial circumstances.

Both desperate to remain in the finals hunt, it’ll be the Demons who come out on top at Blacktown.

Melbourne by 13.
