The GWS Giants’ road to redemption from last year’s Grand Final horror show begins in Blacktown this evening, when they take on crosstown rivals the Sydney Swans in their first Marsh Community Series match. Join The Roar for live scores from 4:10pm (AEDT).
The Giants have named a very different team to the one which was annihilated by Richmond in their last official match back in September last year. New captain Stephen Coniglio will miss after playing for the All Stars in the State of Origin match on Friday night, while all of Nick Haynes, Josh Kelly, Lachie Whitfield, Jeremy Cameron and Toby Greene fronted up for Victoria.
This means tagger Matt de Boer will be the Giants’ de facto captain, as the only member of their new-look leadership group playing.
2019 was a poor year by the Swans’ lofty standards, missing the finals for the first time since 2009 and just the second time since 2002.
However, a bunch of promising youngsters means the future is bright for the Bloods, and with last year’s pick 5 Dylan Stephens among another group of faces making their first appearance in Swans’ colours this evening, the side’s journey back into the top eight begins now.
