Show Preview

The GWS Giants will have their third different captain for the season as they take on the West Coast Eagles at GIANTS Stadium. Keep an eye on all the action from Sydney with live scores on The Roar from 1:10pm (AEST).

With a fractured shoulder forcing acting captain Toby Greene to join regular skipper Stephen Coniglio (ankle) in the casualty ward, it will be up to Josh Kelly to lead the Giants over the next few weeks. With plenty of speculation linking the smooth-moving midfielder to a move back to Melbourne, Kelly will be keen to show the fans he bleeds orange and charcoal with a big game here.

Greene’s absence, plus a late injury to in-form recruit Jesse Hogan, places plenty of pressure on Jeremy Finlayson to lead the Giants’ attack. Finlayson missed the loss to Richmond through suspension, and will be champing at the bit to make amends.

The Giants were pipped by Richmond in a thriller last week, despite holding a 27-point lead during the third quarter. Their recent form has been impressive, and at home, they will be a real challenge for an Eagles outfit which famously doesn’t travel well.

Adam Simpson’s men have been imperious at home this season, but have a 1-3 record on the road, including a 97-point loss to Geelong just a month ago.

Jeremy McGovern is a big loss with a knee injury: the intercept king is one of the Eagles’ most important players and the marshal of the back six. However, former captain Shannon Hurn returns in his place, for a match in which he will break club great Dean Cox’s games record at the Eagles.

Battling Eagles star ruckman Nic Naitanui looms as a major challenge for the Giants, who have recalled veteran Shane Mumford to assist the inexperienced Matt Flynn in taking on the high-flying Eagle. With Mumford in the team, the Giants have won four and are yet to lose in 2021. Will the trend continue?
