Hawthorn reached the lowest low of their stewardship under Alastair Clarkson last round, scoring a paltry 27 points in a loss at the hands of Collingwood.
Clarkson – who has bemoaned his team’s inconsistency this season – is right to be concerned. The Hawks, since the season restart, have won two and lost three, including dropping their previous two against the Pies and Giants.
Melbourne, despite their win last week, have also shown little ability to perform consistently this year. They’ve won just two matches this year, although they have a game in hand. The Demons have failed to win two consecutive games since Rounds 7 and 8 last year, and are firmly at risk of a bottom-four finish for the second year running.
The Hawks, who remain in touch with the top eight provided they win today, have never won at Giants Stadium. The Dees cannot claim to have a better record: Simon Goodwin’s team has won at the venue just once.
Both sides have lost an important tall. The Demons’ Tom McDonald has been ruled out, while Hawthorn’s Jonathon Patton will miss. Potential debutant Darren Minchington and Shaun Burgoyne are likely to join the Hawks’ outfit. Nathan Jones, Alex Neal-Bullen and Joel Smith are all potential inclusions for the Dees.
