Match result:

Richmond have overcome poor first half and a forty-point deficit to send through three last minutes goals and defeat Hawthorn by eight points in Launceston.

A first half dominated largely by a slick Hawthorn, and a vastly disappointing Richmond, saw the hosts lead by 15 and 40 points at the first and main breaks respectively.

Hawthorn, led by a drastically more experienced midfield than last week’s young side, were performing brilliantly, and they were accurate – led by a trio of first-half goals from former skipper Jarryd Roughead.

The game was far from over, but was sitting comfortably in Hawthorn’s hands by the halfway point of the encounter.

And then the second half was played. Awoken from their lethargy after the long break, Richmond emerged determined to salvage their game.

A seven-goal third term helped, but a tiring Hawthorn side and drastically improved skills aided Richmond to get themselves into a position to tackle the Hawks – who continued to hold the lead until the final few minutes.

Richmond’s most memorable play was their final five minutes, with Trent Cotchin providing two goals to send them into the lead before aiding with the final goal.

Hawthorn can take plenty from their final pre-season clash, with their biggest name in Jaeger O’Meara playing well (35 touches), Liam Shiels and James Worpel providing excellent support and Jarryd Roughead slamming through five goals.

Richmond’s biggest names in Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Dion Prestia dominated their possession counts, while the always entertaining Jack Riewoldt and Jack Higgins combo sent through a combined six goals.

Noah Balta, their prodigiously talented first-year player, also provided some highlights but was arguably not as effective as he was in his hit-out last week.

Final score
Hawthorn: 13.9 (87)
Richmond: 14.11 (95)

As the second preseason clash for both teams, both Hawthorn and Richmond will be primed to poach a win in order to keep the momentum heading into the upcoming season.

Hawthorn’s first clash, against the Brisbane Lions in Queensland last weekend, saw them field a largely inexperienced squad, and despite performing admirably, they fell short by 42 points.

Richmond’s match went better, defeating Melbourne by 12 points in a tougher game.

Hawthorn has brought in a heap of experience for tonight’s game though, with a huge amount of changes – 12 players in, 10 players out.

James Frawley, Ben Stratton, Blake Hardwick, Ricky Henderson, Isaac Smith, Paul Puopolo, Luke Breust, Jarryd Roughead, Shaun Burgoyne, Ben McEvoy, Jaeger O’Meara and Liam Shiels are all included in today’s squad – a formidable dozen of inclusions by anybody’s measure.

Tim Mohr, Conor Glass, Marc Pittonet, Harrison Jones, Damon Greaves, Mathew Walker, Jackson Ross, Will Golds, Changkuoth Jiath and Teia Miles have been excluded.

By comparison, Richmond’s taken in a vastly more settled side, with just two changes. Kamdyn McIntosh and Connor Menadue are the pair of inclusions, with young gun Riley Collier-Dawkins and Brandon Ellis departing the side.

Prediction
While one of these sides was a clear winner last weekend and another was admirable but struggled, the extent of Hawthorn’s inclusions means the dynamic of this game changes.

Richmond’s got a near-full strength side, which’ll aid them, but Hawthorn’s close too full strength too.

I’ll probably tip the Tigers, but Hawthorn’s Tasmanian advantage always makes this interesting. Still, it’ll be the visitors by a smidgen.
