The Hawthorn Hawks will be desperate to reverse their slide into oblivion when they take on reigning premiers, the West Coast Eagles at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 1:45pm (AEST).

Hawthorn have lost three on the bounce, all to fellow mid-table opponents (Brisbane, Essendon and Sydney), effectively forfeiting their early season momentum.

Most concerningly for Hawks fans is their malfunctioning forward-line. Hawthorn has struggled to break ten goals in each of those last three losses. Coach Alastair Clarkson has had to throw James Sicily up forward at times to add some goal scoring muscle, but even that move has proven to be ineffective.

The coaching noise of the week linking Clarkson to Carlton was probably just that – noise – but Clarkson saw fit to deny the report to his players. His affirmation to Hawthorn could inspire the team, but inspiration alone wouldn’t be enough to get a win over the Eagles.

Clarkson has serious structural problems. Despite second tier midfielders like James Worpel stepping up, the absence of Tom Mitchell is being keenly felt around the stoppages, and when they are winning possession they just cannot convert.

For contrast, Hawthorn are averaging 51 inside 50s this season, but are only 13th for scoring. Their opponents in this game average fewer inside 50s (49), but are sixth for scoring.

With Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Liam Ryan leading the line high scoring should be the norm. But despite their forward riches, the Eagles haven’t really clicked into top gear yet this season.

Much like Richmond last season, the Eagles have the experience and talent to win most games, and are doing it comfortably so far in 2019 sitting in fourth. As finals approach they need to find that extra gear than accelerated them into the 2018 premiership.

And what better setting to do that than a Saturday afternoon at the MCG. But this match holds extra significance for the Eagles. Their talismanic ruckman Nic Naitanui returns for his first game in just under 12 months.

NicNat’s return was foreshadowed this week by the announcement of a new contract tying him to Perth until 2022. After losing Scott Lycett during trade week, the Eagles could certainly use an injection of NicNat’s energy in the middle.

Joining NicNat in the team this week is dynamo Willie Rioli. Both step in for the suspended Jeremy McGovern and the injured Jeremy Petruccelle. Hawthorn tinker around the edges of their 22 by including Oliver Hanrahan for his debut, joining Conor Nash and Daniel Howe.

Hanrahan has had to wait 3 seasons for this gig, after being selected in the 2017 Rookie draft. Harry Morrison and Kaiden Brand make way along with injured veteran Jarryd Roughead.

Prediction
A Hawthorn win in this game would be a fairly major upset. Hawthorn are woefully out of form at the moment and they need to find some, in a hurry, to threaten the Eagles. In fact, the Eagles will be eyeing this one off as a statement game.

West Coast by 30 points.
