It’s do or die for Melbourne and Brisbane as they lock horns at the MCG in a blockbuster semi final, with the winner earning a date with Geelong in next week’s preliminary final. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).
After a stunning loss to the Swans on the opening weekend of the finals, the Demons now face the task of going three games undefeated, if they are to secure the back-to-back premierships that many have predicted.
Sydney simply hustled and bustled the Demons into submission, with 14 inside 50 tackles in the final quarter reflecting just how committed to the task they were.
The Lions overcame the Tigers in one of the games of the season in Brisbane last weekend, but now return to Melbourne for what looks a tough task against a team with whom they have an ugly recent history. T
wice in 2022 Melbourne have towelled them up, with the Lions simply unable to produce enough stoppages in the back half and struggling to keep up in the centre clearances.
Team news sees the Lions forced into a major loss on match eve, with Joe Daniher heading home to be with his partner for the birth of their first child.
Chris Fagan has also left out Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson, with Dev Robertson the man almost certain to accept the unenviable task of limiting Clayton Oliver’s influence.
Oliver has been dominant in both matches in 2022 and Brisbane coach Chris Fagan must find an answer to produce a different result.
Jaxon Prior is also omitted, with Oscar McInerney unavailable after his concussion suffered against Richmond. Darcy Fort comes in as the No.1 ruckman, while Cam Rayner will also have a key role to play in the midfield. Noah Answerth and Tom Fullarton round out the inclusions.
The Demons are far healthier and settled, with the questions around the fitness and participation of Christian Petracca now apparently answered. The bull will be ready to tear into the Lions’ midfield with his loyal allies there right by his side.
Prediction
Brisbane’s defensive frailties have hampered them all season and Melbourne is a team capable of pouncing on them for a third time in succession.
For the Lions to win, they will have to score big and should Steven May and Jake Lever dominate across the defensive 50, it is hard to see Brisbane racking up the points required.
Whilst the Demons’ attack has not been in perfect sync recently, this shapes as a match where their brutality around the contest may well bring about the end of the Lions’ season, in another dominate display at the home of football.
Melbourne by 38 points.
