A pair of inconsistent teams in the hunt for a finals spot – the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies – will play at The Gabba this evening. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:10pm (AEST).

Melbourne begin this round sitting in tenth spot on the ladder, aided by three wins from their past five games, and in all honestly have had a decent year without much notice. They have equalled their win-loss ledger at 5-5 courtesy of last Sunday’s win over North Melbourne, with wins over Hawthorn and the Crows also aiding their finals pursuit. Nonetheless, if they’re any hope of making the eight, they should be winning this clash against the Pies.

Collingwood are potentially the weakest team beginning the round inside the eight. Their past few games have included deeply uninspiring wins over Sydney and Adelaide after losses to the Eagles and Freo, all of which fails to be good endorsements of their finals aspirations.

The Magpies have not won over a fellow top-eight contender since Round 7’s win over Geelong, and they desperately need a comfortable win here.

Nathan Buckley’s outfit do have the disadvantage of coming into this clash on a four-day break, shorter than the fresher Demons who have had almost a week off footy. Despite Collingwood’s poor form, the fact that they are in the eight at all adds a layer of challenge for Simon Goodwin’s men. They have not won a game over a top-eight team this year, with losses to Port and Brisbane recently reaffirming that trend.
