Have the GWS Giants learnt how to play the Melbourne Cricket Ground? We’ll find out when they take on the Melbourne Demons on Sunday afternoon. Join The Roar for all the action, with live scores and a blog of the match starting at 1:10pm (AEST).

Melbourne put up a brave performance against reigning premiers the West Coast Eagles in Perth last Friday night, but came up short in the last quarter by 16 points.

Leading until the nine-minute mark of the final term, the Demons dominated the home side until they had nothing left to give.

The Eagles kicked it up a gear and Melbourne were left devastated; Max Gawn was at his brilliant best with 56 hit-outs and will need to continue that form against Shane Mumford this weekend.

GWS enjoyed a cruisy 93-point victory at Giants Stadium on Sunday afternoon, demolishing an appalling Carlton Blues effort.

Lachie Whitfield dominated with 40 disposals and three goals, while Jeremy Finlayson (five goals) and Harry Himmelberg (three goals) also hit the scoreboard.

Matt de Boer was among the best, holding the ‘untaggable’ Patrick Cripps to just 12 disposals.

It was all one-way traffic as the Giants turned the afternoon into more of a training run than an AFL match.

At selection, Melbourne made just the one forced change.

Alex Neal-Bullen has been ruled out of the match with concussion, Corey Wagner replaces him in the team.

This will be Wagner’s fifth game for the Demons, a good stint in the VFL has earned him a recall to the senior side.

GWS have dropped Daniel Lloyd, while Zac Williams will miss the clash with a hamstring injury.

Williams strained his left hamstring in the second quarter of the win over Carlton and he is expected to miss a couple of games.

The Giants welcome back vice-captain Stephen Coniglio from a finger injury.

Isaac Cumming will also return to the side for his second game of the season, after a solid NEAFL performance last weekend.

The last time these two teams met was in round 23, 2018 where the Demons ran out 45-point winners at the MCG.

A five-goal third term set up the big scalp for Melbourne in the final round, before the Dees first finals campaign in 12 years.

The versatile, high-flying Harry Himmelberg will play his 50th AFL game this weekend.

Himmelberg’s debut came in round 17, 2016 as a defender against the Lions.

His breakout performance in the 2017 preliminary final against Richmond featured four goals; he has since cemented his place in the Giants’ AFL side playing at both ends of the ground.

Prediction
GWS record at the MCG is abysmal, coach Leon Cameron said so himself. Just a fortnight ago, Hawthorn delivered the Giants 14th loss in 16 trips to the MCG.

Against a struggling Demons’ side, who have won just three games so far in 2019, GWS have to break their shocking run at the ground.

It will be close, but the classy Giants outfit are in better form than the Dees and will get the job done on Sunday.

GWS by 13 points.
