Show Preview

After recording their first win of season 2019, the Melbourne Demons will return home to the MCG and host the St Kilda Saints on Saturday afternoon. Join The Roar for all the action with live scores and a blog of the match from 4:35pm AEST.

There was plenty of talk in the lead up to last Thursday night about Melbourne, three consecutive losses to start a season isn’t exactly what the fans what or the experts predicted.

The Demons responded with a 22-point win over the Sydney Swans at the SCG, and kick-started their season.

St Kilda also recorded a win in round four, overcoming an injury-hit Hawthorn by five points.

Scoring dried up in the last, but the Saints had multiple opportunities to hit the front, inaccuracy in front of goal threatened to ruin their chances of a shock victory.

The Saints’ midfield work-rate and defensive efforts held the Hawks to just one behind in the final term. St Kilda have surprisingly started 3-1, but will face a bigger test this weekend against Melbourne.

Melbourne have made two changes to their side for this weekend’s match; strengthening their defence with the return of Neville Jetta and Jordan Lewis.

Jetta was a late withdrawal against the Swans last Thursday with knee soreness, while this will be Jordan Lewis’ first game for the season after sustaining a hamstring before round one.

Both Oscar McDonald and Billy Stretch have been dropped from the Demons’ squad to make way for the duo.

St Kilda will also welcome an experienced pair back to the side this weekend with Jarryn Geary and Jack Steven included in the team list.

Skipper Geary missed the win against Hawthorn, withdrawn late with an illness. Steven returns after two weeks out of action, St Kilda managing his workload early in the season.

Defender Daniel McKenzie is out of this clash, precautionary action after a head knock against the Hawks. Hunter Clark has been omitted; he’ll play for Sandringham tomorrow (Sunday).

In Round 15, 2018 St Kilda put together a brilliant final quarter effort to beat the Demons by four points, though it was a tense final few minutes.

Prediction
After a slow start to the season, Melbourne should record their second win with a win over the Saints.

It won’t be easy and will (hopefully) be close, but expect the Demons to get over the line, just.
