Rhyce Shaw is officially the senior coach of the North Melbourne Kangaroos, can he get them back on track with a win over the Hawthorn Hawks at Marvel Stadium on Friday night? Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 7:50pm AEST.

North Melbourne returned from an unsuccessful trip west with a 49-point loss to the Eagles, but remained upbeat and had an exciting week at the club regardless.

There has been much speculation over the last fortnight as to whether Rhyce Shaw had formally been offered – and accepted – the head coach role at North.

On Thursday these rumours were confirmed, with the club announcing it had found its man: a “people person” who has “encouraged”, “inspired” and “reassured” the football department and the board, club chairman Ben Buckley says.

Shaw has signed a three-year contract, beginning in 2020.

Round 19 was a tough weekend for Hawthorn as well, who hosted the Lions in Tasmania and suffered a fourth consecutive defeat to Luke Hodge’s new club.

The Hawks had a shocking day in front of goals – kicking seven goals, 18 behinds – and fell short by 27 points to a Brisbane Lions team now finals-bound.

At selection this week North have made two changes.

Veteran defender Scott Thompson has recovered quickly from a ruptured testicle suffered in round 18 against Brisbane to make the Friday night clash.

Kayne Turner also returns after being rested last weekend.

Shaun Atley will miss the game with knee soreness, while Jed Anderson has been omitted.

Hawthorn has made just one change.

Tim O’Brien is back into the side, replacing Jonathon Ceglar who has been omitted. It is a straight swap of the late change made last Saturday when O’Brien’s calf was sore.

Earlier this season in round three, the Hawks were too good at the MCG and overran the Kangaroos by 16-points.

It was the Roos’ third loss to start the season, although that winless stretch was broken the following week against the Adelaide Crows.

Prediction
With its head coach confirmed, North Melbourne will be up and about, desperate not to drop a fourth game in a row.

Alastair Clarkson might have another trick up his sleeve to keep the Hawks slim finals hopes alive, but the Kangaroos should have this game covered.
