The Rhyce Shaw reign of terror commences this Friday night, as his North Melbourne team takes on Richmond at Marvel Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and blog from 7:50pm AEST.

Shaw steps into the role for the rest of the season in something of a surprise to a lot of football fans, despite winning the AFL Coaches Association assistant of the year award in 2017.

Immediately he has promised energy and excitement on the park, and offering reporters on Tuesday a “quirkiness” to his style. He also made left many with a confused sense of foreboding and relief by exclaiming “I’m not Brad Scott”.

The Kangaroos waved goodbye to former boss Scott in style last week, finding a vein of form Scott wanted from Round 1. Their 25-point win over the Bulldogs was a fitting tribute to a coach who has done “ok” over the last decade in charge. A 50 per cent win ratio and four finals appearances seems on face value par for a club with below average resources but a lot of spirit.

On the field Shaw takes charge of a club in 14th spot, momentarily boosted from the doldrums by last week’s win. Unsurprisingly the new match committee has made no changes to the successful 22, with steady defender Jamie Macmillan selected to play his 150th this week.

The bad news for Shaw is that he’s facing an in-form Richmond in this game. After a grinding win where they lead all day against Essendon in the Dreamtime game last week, Richmond will be eager to continue the momentum and put pressure on the three clubs above them on the ladder.

Injuries have plagued Richmond this year, with their spine tapped severely. But fans will be heartened to see Trent Cotchin return for this game to bring some mettle and experience to the midfield. One thing North’s squad doesn’t lack is midfield experience, so Cotchin will have a key role in this game.

Big man Ivan Soldo also returns to the ruck to play disrupter to North champion Todd Goldstein. Midfield and forward grunter Dan Butler also returns.

The big shock at the Richmond came with the dropping of Dan Rioli. After only 13 touches (and a goal) last week, the Richmond backroom are making a statement that only 100 per cent is acceptable. Connor Menadue and Callum Coleman-Jones join Rioli on the sidelines.

Prediction
Sadly for North the new-boss-bump probably happened for them last week. With Cotchin back and more steel around the ball, it would be optimistic to expect North to get the points. Expect a close game, but the experience and (frankly) superior talent of Richmond to shine out.

Richmond by 18 points.
