It’s a massive Thursday night game, as Richmond host Collingwood at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:20pm (AEDT).

With both of these teams having massive expectations surrounding them for 2019, last week’s performances left something to be desired.

Richmond defeated a gallant Carlton side, as expected, but didn’t perform anywhere near their best. Collingwood, for their part, lost a scrappy clash against the Cats. Collingwood will obviously be displeased with their first up performance, but you’d imagine that Richmond will also not be too happy with the manner of their win – nor the ramifications of the clash.

Possibly the worst ramification of Richmond’s season opener was the loss of acclaimed defender Alex Rance, who’ll miss the remainder of the season after an ACL injury. It means that Richmond will be without their man in defence, and this clash will be our first time seeing how the Tigers perform without him.

It’ll be interesting to see how Collingwood exploits this, too: returning forward Jamie Elliott was excellent last week, whilst their engine room was good but not outstanding. Expect them to be working hard of rectifying that.

Four changes between the teams: a solitary switch for the Pies and a trio of changes for the Tigers.

Richmond has opted not to replace Alex Rance with a like-for-like defender, instead calling up Jason Castanga, Oleg Markov and Brandon Ellis for their first games of 2019. Bachar Houli is out with injury, whilst Noah Balta has also been dropped.

Collingwood’s change is a simple one: young Callum Brown is out, whilst Levi Greenwood rejoins the side (with the likely aim of tagging Richmond’s Dustin Martin).

Prediction
Hard one to pick. Richmond will be gunning hard to get revenge after Collingwood’s preliminary final brilliance last September, and Collingwood will be hoping to take a scalp after an underwhelming beginning to their 2019 campaign. The consensus seems to have the Tigers prevailing, but I reckon the Pies will win.

Collingwood by 11 points.
