The Richmond Tigers are on the precipice of oblivion with three rounds to go. A loss to the last-placed North Melbourne Kangaroos would all but consign them to missing the finals after back-to-back premierships. Tune into events from the MCG here on The Roar with live scores from 4:35pm (AEST).

The Tigers are on the verge of doing what Adelaide did in 1999, and miss the finals going for an historic premiership threepeat. Eleventh on the ladder, albeit only a game out of the top eight, it’s now or never for one of the AFL’s greatest ever teams.

A heartbreaking 4-point loss to Fremantle last week had the double blow of giving four points to another team in the mix for finals, and they’ll have to oust the eighth-placed Dockers to see September action. The Tigers will be favourites today, as well as in their final two weeks – but losing six of their last seven matches, three to sides outside the eight, doesn’t inspire much confidence.

The Kangaroos have had about as impressive a wooden-spoon season as is possible, recovering from an ugly start to the year to come along in leaps and bounce since their mid-season bye.

A game and percentage adrift of Hawthorn in 17th, it might be too late for the Roos to jump off the bottom (not that they’ll be overly keen to lose the chance to bring top draftee Jason Horne into the fold), but they’ll know this clash against the vulnerable Tigers is a seriously winnable game.

Damien Hardwick has swung five changes for this crunch clash, including handing Maurice Rioli Jr a heart-warming debut. His famous father was a legend of the Tigers, including winning a Norm Smith Medal in 1982. Here’s hoping he can add his own legacy to the long line of famous Riolis to have graced the game.

Meanwhile, North welcome back young stars Cameron Zurhaar and Tarryn Thomas from injury, among four changes.

The Roos have form for breaking Tiger hearts – they had a famous victory over the fifth-placed Richmond in a 2015 elimination final. Can history repeat at the ‘G today?
