St Kilda and Brisbane do battle in Round 14 AFL action at Marvel Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:35pm (AEST).

The Brisbane Lions’ ship has started to look a little shaky after an impressive start to the season that saw them threatening the top four just a few weeks back.

Losses to Carlton and Fremantle on the either side of their victory over Hawthorn in Round 11 have seen them slip to the fringes of the eight, with the match against the Blues a particularly disappointing effort.

St Kilda also started 2019 in excellent fashion before slipping out of the eight on the back of some inconsistent form and a growing injury list.

Wins against Gold Coast and Carlton have rejuvenated them somewhat despite a visit to China in Round 11 that saw them thumped by Port Adelaide.

It is a big week for the Saints, with Jake Carlisle returning after back surgery and the debut of Dan Hannebery sure to add depth and talent to what was beginning to look like a threadbare team in recent weeks.

Should Hannebery provide all for which he was recruited by Alan Richardson, St Kilda may finally have the mixture of youth and experience in the midfield thay have been seeking.

Lewis Taylor misses this match for the Lions and Allen Christensen returns to the senior team after some impressive play in the NEAFL. Lachie Neale and Eric Hipwood will once again be vital for Brisbane.

However, a wide selection of ball winners in the midfield need to step up and assist Neale. The new recruit has been let down at times by his fellow mids and with such a dominant and effective man up front in Hipwood, a victory in contested ball makes the Lions a very difficult proposition.

Prediction
In a match that will either see Brisbane stay in the eight or the Saints move into it, expect some fireworks, with both sides certain to come ready for battle.

Effectively, a loss today makes things challenging for both over the final two months of the season, with more wins than losses required if either was to force their way back into finals contention.
