All eyes will be on Lance Franklin as Sydney take on Geelong under the Friday night lights at the SCG, with the Swans superstar needing four goals to join the elusive 1000 club. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEDT).
Franklin could only move a goal closer to the milestone in the Swans’ victory over GWS in Round 1’s game of the week, and while the Cats have largely kept him in check over his illustrious career – only old side Hawthorn concede fewer than Geelong’s 2.42 goals a game to the champion – the stage is perfectly set for one of modern footy’s iconic moments.
He’s not the only Swan set on making Geelong’s usually miserly backline’s lives difficult, though. Co-captain Luke Parker was incredible against the Giants, snagging five goals, while Isaac Heeney is dangerous wherever he goes on the field. Young gun Logan McDonald, fresh off inking a monster contract extension, will likewise be a damaging second foil to Buddy should he get going.
The Cats couldn’t have been more impressive in their thumping Round 1 win over Essendon, showing some uncharacteristic dash and dare in the process.
After their ignominious finals series last year, this looms as an early litmus test to see just how much the Cats have improved this season, and how sustainable their new-look game plan is.
For the Swans, rebounding defender Jake Lloyd and sparky youngster Chad Warner are handy inclusions, though they’ll miss Justin McInerney’s drive across the wing and half-back. The Cats have a pair of valuable ins themselves, with star wingman Mitch Duncan and lockdown defender Jed Bews back, while Shaun Higgins has been rested.
