The Sydney Swans host cross-town rivals the GWS Giants in a finals series Sydney Derby. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 4:20pm AEST.

As the siren sounded and Melbourne beat the Giants at the MCG in round 23, the finals matchups were settled: Melbourne would play a Victorian rival in Geelong at the MCG and the Giants will face their Sydney rival, the Swans, at the SCG.

In 2016, the sides played in a qualifying final; GWS took bragging rights by 36 points in front of 60,222 people – the largest Sydney Derby crowd – but of course, it was Sydney who made it all the way to the grand final.

After their Round 23 loss to Hawthorn, which cost them a double-chance in finals, Sydney will be boosted by the return of Lance Franklin and Luke Parker from groin injuries.

Jordan Dawson and Robbie Fox are the unlucky omissions to make space for the experienced pair in Franklin and Parker.

On the eve of their third finals campaign, the injury-riddled Giants’ side have declared four big names fit to play.

It was a balancing act for the GWS match committee: how many come back into the side? Who should play without limited game-time? Will their injuries hold up in the game, they’ve only trained for the past five weeks?

But this is an elimination final, so Brett Deledio (calf), Toby Greene (hamstring), Zac Williams (Achilles) and Matt de Boer (hamstring) will all return from their respective injuries to face the Sydney Swans.

Aiden Bonar, Jeremy Finlayson, Lachlan Keeffe and Daniel Lloyd have all been omitted in favour of the more experienced players.

GWS hosted Sydney in round 22 at Spotless Stadium, just 21 days ago. An injury to Phil Davis forced the defender to play forward, three more players were injured throughout the night, and the Giants’ became undermanned and vulnerable.

Lance Franklin put on a clinic, kicking five goals, four behinds and Sydney had a 40-point turnaround, to run out winners by 20-points.

Three weeks later, will GWS have an answer to Lance Franklin?

Josh Kelly will celebrate his 100th AFL game in this clash, will he spend the summer on 100 games or will the Giants feature again in September?

Prediction
The Giants, on paper, have one of their best teams all year, but the Swans are a 4 goal better side when Franklin plays.

Can Phil Davis stop Buddy Franklin? That is the match up that decides this game.

It will be tight and expect the Giants to be in the game all night, but with Buddy back, it’s the Swans for me.

Sydney Swans by four points.
