The battle of the bridge between Sydney and Greater Western Sydney is always a spectacle to tune into. This time at the SCG, the Swans will be in desperate need of a victory to keep their season alive, while the Giants need to bounce back from an upset last week to reinstate their maiden premiership aspirations. Sydney are sitting at 1-4 and hanging on to their finals chances by a thread. Lance Franklin bounced back last week from an early rounds slump with four goals and jumped to seventh on the all-time goal kickers list.
But, it is Jake Lloyd who has been Sydney’s most prolific player. Lloyd has acquired over 30 disposals in the first five rounds and has been influential in the Swans being in games for so long.
Against Richmond, Sydney only played another half of football which lost them the game. But their intent in the final quarter to move the ball quickly showed they still can be a threat.
For GWS, a shock loss to the Dockers last week came at an inopportune time for the Giants as they threatened to be building some serious momentum.
Jeremy Cameron is leading the Coleman, Lachie Whitfield is dominating all around the ground and Stephen Coniglio is raising his worth as he approaches the end of his contract.
While they might all be dominating, the biggest player for the Giants this week is their captain, Phil Davis. Davis went down with an injury concern last week against Fremantle and has been on light duties all week.
Davis vs Franklin has been the modern day Silvagni vs Carey, if Davis gets the better of Franklin, the Giants usually win. If Franklin gets off the chain, the Swans usually get the four points. Both outcomes were seen last year.
Prediction
The Swans have been predictable in their ball use and the Giants defend well as a unit, the five forwards around Franklin will need to hit the scoreboard and be an option if the Swans are to keep their season alive.
Greater Western Sydney by 51 points – Jeremy Cameron to skip ahead in the Coleman Medal race
