The Sydney Swans are looking to continue their surprise surge in 2021 when they take on the struggling St Kilda Saints at their SCG fortress. Keep in touch with the first match of Saturday afternoon footy with live scores on The Roar from 1:45pm (AEST).

Arguably the season’s biggest surprise story meets undoubtedly 2021’s biggest disappointment at the SCG, with the Swans looking to entrench themselves in the top eight. The Saints, by contrast, are simply looking to resuscitate their spluttering season.

Few expected John Longmire’s young team to be challenging for the finals this early, but a 7-4 start to the year and a series of impressive wins have seen them outperform even reigning premiers Richmond to this stage of 2021.

Their form has tapered off slightly of late, with several of the “cygnets” – namely Errol Gulden and Braeden Campbell – suffering injuries to dampen their bright start to AFL life; but a 22-point win in their most recent match, over Carlton, was an impressive triumph against a side that left nothing in the tank.

The Saints’ 20-point win over lowly North Melbourne in Round 11 was about as uninspiring as a win can get. Brett Ratten’s men avoided a humiliating defeat to the wooden spoon favourites, but short of providing Mason Wood a chance to torment his old side with three goals, there wasn’t much else for them to take away from the match besides the four points.

The Swans are a couple of steps above the Roos in the class stakes, and there are plenty of Saints needing to turn around their patchy form if they are to leave Sydney with a second straight win. Chief among them is Bradley Hill, the high-priced recruit Bradley Hill, tagged to just 6 disposals by the Roos’ Bailey Scott. The Swans are stingy by habit, so if Hill thinks he’ll have an easier time of things in Round 12, he’d best think again.
